My tattoo keeps calling me out

Good morning,

When life gets in the way, we need little reminders.

I have the words "EGO IS THE ENEMY" tattooed on my arm. Permanently. In actual ink.

And yes, I see the problem. Getting a tattoo about being humble is like wearing a T-shirt that says "I'm very quiet." The message and the method are having a bit of an argument.

But here's why I like it. Ego never shows up wearing a name tag. It shows up as “I already know this,” or “I don’t need anyone telling me what to do.”

It shows up as not saying sorry in the group chat. It shows up as pretending you meant to take the wrong exit. Then you drive 14 extra miles so you don't have to admit it.

My ego still shows up most days, tattoo and all. It's a stubborn little guy.

The trick is catching it over and over. And you can only catch what you're reminded to look for.

You don't need a needle for that, thankfully. That's kinda why Col's Notes exists. A short note lands in your inbox every day to help you stay teachable. It's free. No ink, no pain, no explaining it to your mum.

Next time you need to be right about something, try saying "fair point" instead. Ego hates that one.

See you tomorrow

Col

Who it's for

Col's Notes is for anyone who knows they're capable of more and wants a little help getting there. Maybe you've read some inspirational books and forgotten most of them. Maybe you're just starting over, stepping up, or just tired of good intentions that never make it past Monday. These daily notes are for anyone of any age, any job, or any starting point.

Why it's free

Plenty of people have given me a good word at the right moment, usually without knowing it mattered. This is my way of passing that on. Now and then I'll mention a book, tool or product that's helped me, but only if I use it myself and think it might help you too. You'll never be pushed to buy anything, and I think that every note is useful whether you click or not.

If you're after hacks, hustle or a 30-day transformation, this probably isn't your thing.

About Col

Col is a lifelong learner, an occasional overthinker and someone who believes we all have something useful to share.

Originally from the UK and now living in Canada, he’s spent more than 35 years in business, learning a few things about people, success and life along the way. He's always had a passion for personal development, reading books, exploring new ideas and learning from people who seem to have figured out a thing or two.

Col's certainly not an expert at life, and he's made his fair share of mistakes. But he believes that even the smallest piece of good advice can make a difference when it reaches the right person at the right time.

That's why he created Col's Notes. A little bit of wisdom, a few lessons learned and some practical ideas to help you make each day a little better. No preaching, no pretending to have all the answers. Just one useful note at a time.
